The Cochise County School Safety Program

The School Safety Interoperability Fund: School Safety Pilot Program, selected Cochise County as the recipient of funds to strengthen the interoperability between law enforcement, public safety agencies, and county school districts. The funding supports multimedia data communications, identification and incident location, interactive floor plans and mapping, panic alarm systems activating direct collaboration between schools and public safety agencies, as well as allowing for real-time control over communication assets during an incident.

"Reading Across Cochise County" initiative

Reading is the foundational skill for all future learning, and being able to read by the end of third grade is a crucial milestone in a child’s future academic success. Research shows that a child’s third grade reading level is a pretty strong predictor of how well a student performs in high school, whether or not they graduate, and if they go on to college. Only 38% of the third graders in Cochise can read at grade level (arizonafuture.org), statewide only 41% of third grade students can read at grade level; while the state goal is 72% (arizonafuture.org). This initiative was developed in close collaboration with the Garrison Commander, Col Ives of Ft Huachuca, County School Superintendent, Dr. Jacqui Clay, and community members. Our goal is to put a book in each of the 4990+ student's hands and cultivate their love for reading.

The Cochise County School Behavioral Health Consortium.

Over the last few years, we have seen an increase in behavioral health issues. Additionally, the situations created by the COVID-19 pandemic have added stress and mental health conditions which have affected productivity and overall wellness of staff and students. There was no viable structure in the Cochise County school system to address mental health issues when there was a crisis. There is no viable structure where preventive measures, professional development and community training are offered to enhance the knowledge and prevent the stigma of mental health. The consortium provides a unique opportunity to provide mental health training to school employees, students, parents and community members in Cochise County. The Consortium also augments services to schools with special needs students. This initiative assists in strengthening the partnerships between our schools and mental health organizations in Cochise County.
