About
Betty Guardado grew up in south central Los Angeles. Her father worked as a butcher until Betty was 11 years old, when he had an accident that left him disabled. Following the incident, Betty's mother started working as a house cleaner, and Betty took on the responsibilities of cooking, cleaning, and caring for her two younger brothers. While employed as a housekeeper at the Century Plaza Hotel, Betty became involved in the union for hospitality workers. Through her efforts as a union organizer for hotel employees in Los Angeles, Betty relocated to Arizona in 2007 to assume her role as the organizing director in Phoenix. Betty also was involved in leading independent voter turnout initiatives that resulted in the election of several Phoenix City Council members. Her work involved nurturing emerging leaders and empowering working-class families. In 2018, Betty made the decision to run for the Phoenix City Council. In May 2019, she secured a victory representing Phoenix District 5. Her primary focus is improving living conditions in these neighborhoods and promoting responsible economic development across the entire city of Phoenix.
